Children's Awareness Month: Demanding Accountability for Suicide of 4th Grader Jianna Duran

A moment of silence was held in the memory of Jianna Duran at yesterday's Santa Rosa Council Meeting

Children's Awareness Month takes place in June every year. It is a special month that focuses on a generation of leaders who will pave the way for our future. It is a time to raise awareness about children’s challenges and promote their health, safety, and education.

The proclamation to designate June as a month dedicated to children was signed in 1996. It began as an initiative to honor children lost to violence and now includes initiatives to protect and celebrate the innocence of childhood.

Common threats to a child’s overall well-being include domestic violence, neglect, lack of educational opportunities, and food insecurity, especially during the developmental years.

I provided public comment at yesterday’s Santa Rosa City Council Meeting. For the first time, I utilized the overhead projector to project Jianna Duran’s image onto the screen. After seeing her image in front of me, I could not contain the emotional reaction.

Our community failed to protect the life of a 10-year-old, innocent child who was crying out for help.
