Mr. Joshua Duran, Jianna’s biological father, and his side of the family, recently visited the grave site. Although Ms. Perez informed the media that she visits Jianna’s grave site daily, the Duran Family informed me that all flowers around the grave are dead.

Court records reveal child molestation, dog abuse allegations against Santa Rosa man

A Santa Rosa man admitted to sexually abusing a young girl after he was arrested on charges involving child pornography and the sexual abuse of a dog, according to newly filed court records.

A Santa Rosa man admitted last month to molesting a young girl — but only after he was arrested on separate charges involving child pornography and the sexual abuse of a dog, according to newly filed court documents.

Jeremiah Ortega, 26, is being held without bail in the Sonoma County jail. Prosecutors outlined the full range of allegations against him in a May 13 court filing arguing he should stay in custody.

At a hearing Wednesday, Sonoma County Judge Paige Hein ruled that Ortega will remain in jail. His next court appearance is scheduled for June 5, when he’s expected to respond to the charges and schedule a hearing to determine if the case will move forward.

Ortega is charged with multiple counts of sexually abusing a child, including two that involve the use of force, as well as having child pornography and abusing an animal. The incidents span nearly two years.

According to court records, Ortega was first reported to Santa Rosa police in July 2023. The child, identified in court documents as Jane Doe, told investigators he had offered her money to keep quiet and described being assaulted in a bedroom, at a beach and in a movie theater. She was 7 or 8 years old at the time.

After the girl’s mother confronted Ortega, he reportedly cut off contact, blocking her on social media and refusing to respond. Police were unable to gather further evidence, and the investigation was paused after the mother said she needed to prioritize her daughter’s recovery.

The child died in February, according to court documents. No details about her death were included.

Authorities have not publicly confirmed her identity, but the timeline and details in court records align with events described to The Press Democrat by parents who say their 10-yearold daughter died by suicide earlier this year after experiencing sexual abuse.

In April, Sonoma County sheriff’s deputies arrested Ortega after receiving a tip in mid-2024 from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children that child pornography had been distributed via Snapchat from a Forestville address. A search of Ortega’s devices found more than 60 videos and 200 images of child sexual abuse material, involving victims ranging from toddlers to adolescents, prosecutors said.

“A full report ... is still pending ... but one can reasonably expect that thousands of images will be uncovered,” Deputy District Attorney Brian Morimune wrote.

Two of the videos reportedly show Ortega sexually abusing a small dog. In one, the miniature pinscher appears distressed and tries to escape.

When investigators questioned him about the footage, Ortega “appeared confused ... and asked whether such behavior was even illegal,” Morimune wrote

Santa Rosa police re-engaged in the investigation at that point. During a follow-up interview, Ortega admitted to molesting Jane Doe and provided details that matched her earlier statement, according to court documents.

The girl’s father, who lives in Fresno, told The Press Democrat he learned in April from a person close to the family that his daughter had allegedly been sexually abused by her mother’s former partner. He also said he was told the family had filed a complaint with police and that the girl’s grandparents had asked the man to leave their home.

Santa Rosa police said they could not disclose whether a complaint had been filed.

The Press Democrat is not naming the girl’s parents in order to protect their privacy.

The girl’s mother confirmed that Ortega had once lived with them but said he had not been in the home since 2023. The two share a 2-year-old child who remains in her care.

“I used to talk to (my daughter) on video call,” her father said. “Two weeks before she died, she started asking me to come get her. She wouldn’t tell me what was going on.”

The father said he believes Ortega abused his daughter and that the child’s mother never should have allowed him into the home.

Asked whether she believed Ortega was responsible, the girl’s mother declined to comment.
