Sebastopol’s Community Market reflects a complicated truth: a space staffed by warm, culturally aware, genuinely kind people, yet surrounded by a clientele whose behavior exposes the gap between professed liberal values and practiced inclusivity. The workers create an atmosphere shaped by humor, music, and real human connection, but many of the predominantly white liberal shoppers reveal how easily “progressive” identity can become a shield rather than a commitment. Supporting Community Market still matters—its staff embody the best of what local commerce can be—but it is also time for all of us to insist that the narratives we claim to uphold about equity, belonging, and justice are lived out in public, not just spoken.
